Neil S
achse Foundation Hosts Neurotrauma Forum
On Tuesday 27 November 2007 the Neil Sachse Foundation held a discussion forum “The First Step to Curing Neurotrauma” in conjunction with the Neurosurgical Research Foundation and PARAQUAD SA at Parliament House.  The evening was an opportunity for us to highlight the need for funding to develop improvements in treatment for neurotrauma (spinal cord and brain injury).  The evening was a great success with all parties agreeing that neurotrauma has become a silent epidemic and it is important that South Australia is better funded in this area of research as it is currently significantly under-resourced. Visiting the Western Bulldogs

Neil was recently given the opportunity to visit his old stomping ground in Victoria where he played football for Footscray in 1975.  While Neil was
there he was shown a large scale redevelopment project at Whitten Oval –
a jewel which is expected to re-ignite the Western suburbs.  It was exciting
to hear that there will be a display about Neil in their Hall of Fame once it is completed.  The Bulldogs have been long-time supporters of the Neil
Sachse Foundation and we look forward to their continued help with promoting the need for SCI research.

Society for Neuroscience Conference 2007
In November 2007 our CEO Neil Sachse attended the Society for Neuroscience 2007 conference in San Diego, California.  It was a great opportunity to find out what spinal cord injury research is taking place at the moment and to ensure that our research is cutting edge.

During the conference Neil also attended a meeting of the International Campaign for Cure of Spinal Cord Injury Paralysis (ICCP) of which we are a member.  We are joining forces again on another project for SCOPE.  The mission of SCOPE is to enhance the development of clinical trials that accurately validate therapeutic interventions for spinal cord injury.

BREAKTHROUGH: The ICCP have released the first ever guide to clinical trials - what you should know.

After 2 and a half years of collecting and collaborating research, writing and discussion, the ICCP is proud to present six papers on experimental clinical trials – two regarding what you should know when considering participation in clinical trials and four outlining the guidelines to follow when conducting clinical trials.

These papers represent a wealth of knowledge from around the world, as they have been developed through consultation and collaboration across the eleven members of the ICCP and have also been published in the academic journal, Spinal Cord.

If you or someone close to you is considering participation in a clinical trial, then the Neil Sachse Foundation recommends that you read the following documents. The summary document is ten pages, giving you an overview of the risks and benefits involved, while also giving an overview of the industry and how far along the path to a cure we actually are (click here to download 1.1MB PDF ). The 40 page document provides a more in-depth assessment of what to look for and the questions to ask the medical practitioners. You can read about the ASIA scale, spontaneous recovery and the risks involved in participating in unapproved trials. In addition, it will explain the processes involved in a clinical trial and explain terms such a bias, control and blinding (click here to download 2.4MB PDF ). Both of these papers also give you a checklist of questions to have answered to help make your decision to participate in a clinical trial.

The other four papers describe the guidelines to abide by for medical practitioners to conduct ethical clinical trials in spinal cord injury. Therefore, these are targeted at medical practitioners and are designed to be read and understood by these professionals.

Click here to be transferred to the Spinal Cord journal’s website, where you can download the following four papers:

  • Spontaneous recovery after spinal cord injury and statistical power needed for therapeutic clinical trials
  • Clinical trial outcome measuresClinical trial inclusion/exclusion criteria and ethics
  • Clinical trial design
